Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
