At Least 98 Palestinian Detainees Lost Their Lives in Israeli Custody Since October 2023, Official Figures Shows
Based on information released by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have perished while detained starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body located in Israel has indicated that the true number is almost certainly substantially greater, as a result of many of missing individuals from Gaza.

Updated Statistics
Official armed forces last updated records on custodial deaths for May 2024, and correctional authorities in September 2024. Investigators documented an additional 35 casualties in detention subsequent to these dates and confirmed them with Israeli authorities.
Despite the overall count of fatalities recorded being substantially larger than earlier projections, it probably fails to capture the entire scope of Palestinian loss, according to the leader of the prisoner monitoring division.
“Even though we are offering documentation for a greater figure of deaths than previously reported, this is not the entire story,” he said. “We are certain that there are still people who died in confinement that we don’t know about.”
Non-Combatant Fatalities
Classified Israeli data shows that the majority of Palestinian prisoners from Gaza who died in jail were non-combatants, according to a related investigation.
By May of 2024, a military intelligence database monitoring all fighters in Gaza, a list of more than 47,000 listed people, documented merely 21 casualties in detention. At that time, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in detention.
Detention Conditions
Brutality, torture, and other abuse of Palestinians has become routine across Israel’s jail system throughout two years of conflict. High-ranking authorities have publicly referenced minimal sustenance and an below-ground detention center confining Palestinians who are kept in darkness.
Current and former prisoners and insiders from the defense forces have all alleged routine infractions of international law.
Organized Maltreatment
The systematic abuse came with a disturbing rise in fatalities documented across at least 12 prison sites in Israel. During the previous decade preceding the hostilities, there were usually several casualties a year.
“This is not merely an isolated incident occasionally. It is institutional and it is expected to endure,” an official commented, in part since there is a climate of virtual exemption from consequences for fatalities and maltreatment of Palestinians.
Only a single instance of attacking detainees has proceeded to court, with the military personnel handed a punishment to half a year. An attempt to charge other suspects over a severe beating including abuse caused public rallies and the apprehension of Israel’s chief legal officer, with the alleged perpetrators now demanding that indictments against them be withdrawn.
No Legal Action
“Regardless of this significant total of casualties, during 24 months not one individual has been arrested,” the official noted. “There have been no charges over any killing.
“During the time these practices are being applied, all Palestinian detainees in custody faces risk, even the physically well individuals, even the juveniles who have no health problems.”
High-Profile Cases
Several casualties in custody have been high profile, such as a 50-year-old healthcare leader who perished in prison after four months in confinement.
An inmate detained alongside the deceased testified that he was taken to the exercise area by correctional officers just prior to his passing, clearly wounded and exposed from the hips downward. His remains has not been returned to Gaza.
Other prisoners who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. Detention administrators and armed services provided investigators with the figure of fatalities in custody, and basic other details for example the facility where they died, but not the inmates’ personal details.
Documentation Problems
Regarding 21 occurrences, primarily detainees from Gaza, researchers could not to connect the minimal data supplied by authorities to a casualty documented by advocacy bodies, via statements from released detainees or reporting in the press.
The prisoners’ relatives may not know about their loved ones’ deaths either, as Israel has made it difficult to monitor detainees it is confining. During 210 days at the beginning of the conflict, the armed services declined to provide essential data about the whereabouts of many of individuals held in Gaza, in effect implementing a practice of involuntary missing persons, per the rights monitoring body.
